Rarity
Osmium is not only the rarest precious metal but also the rarest non-radioactive element in existence. Osmium is extracted together with platinum. 10,000 tons of platinum ore contain only 30 grams of osmium. The separation of these metals is complex and expensive. If the production of platinum decreases, osmium will no longer be mined. This will further increase its scarcity. The annual production since 2019 is about 1000 kg. A significant amount is used for crystallization, the remaining amount in the form of osmium compounds is used internationally in industry and academic research.
Opportunities with Osmium
Osmium is seen as an investment-and jewelry metal by the market. There could be many other applications resulting from the special properties of osmium. However, osmium is too rare and too expensive for any of these application options. Investors are speculating that osmium will become increasingly difficult for jewelers to obtain due to its rarity. In the future, private and institutional investors will supply the jewelry market with crystalline osmium in the form of Osmium Bars, Osmium Diamonds and Osmium Stars. It is therefore to be expected that – despite fluctuations - the price of osmium will primarily rise. The use of osmium in jewelry is also increasing. Osmium is often combined with metals such as gold, silver, platinum or titanium to create spectacular pieces of jewelry. These pieces of jewelry are also snatching away material from the osmium commodity market. Since the pieces of jewelry remain in private hands, their osmium cannot be recovered or reused.

Properties
Osmium has the highest abrasion resistance of all materials. It would therefore be the most durable nail file in the world. It also has the highest density of all elements and compounds in chemistry. Therefore, it cannot be counterfeited. It boasts a unique blue-silver to blue-white luster, which unfolds primarily in the reflection of sunlight and LED artificial light. Its high rate of reflection throws the light back in all directions. This enables you to admire the sparkling and overwhelming crystal structure. The compression modulus of osmium is also higher than that of any other material in the world. One could build the highest buildings or the most stable submarines from osmium, if only there was more than the annual 1200 kg of it available.
Periodic Table
Osmium is a chemical element with the element symbol Os and the atomic number 76. In the periodic table of the elements it is in the 8th group, the iron group. It is a hard, brittle, steel-blue transition metal and belongs to the platinum metals. Osmium has the highest compression modulus of all elements with 462 GPa, only exceeded by aggregated diamond nanorods, and the highest density with 22.61 g/cm3. Osmium completes the precious metals in the subgroup elements. It is the last of its kind.
Precious metals
Precious metals are metals which are corrosion-resistant, i.e. which are permanently chemically stable in a natural environment under the influence of air and water. Due to this stability, gold and silver have been used for the production of jewelry and coins since the ancient times. During the last four centuries, platinum metals, which are similarly corrosion-resistant to gold, were discovered. Gold, silver, platinum and palladium have played an important role on the world markets to this day. Since 2014, osmium has also been available on the market, as it can now be crystallized and therefore traded. Thus, it can be used as a means of payment, as an asset or as a jewelry metal throughout the market. Non-crystalline osmium is harmful to health. Therefore, trading osmium on the open market was not possible before the crystallization process was initiated.
